The end of one year and the beginning of a new one appeals to the best in us to start fresh, strive to do better and to grow. A new year brings endless possibilities, and that sounds particularly appealing as we head into 2021. You may have personal resolutions such as eating healthier, exercising more regularly, or even hiking Mount Washington. New Year’s resolutions are usually geared toward changing our habits and behaviors, and that is one reason why resolutions are so hard to keep. The good news is that according to one study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, those who set New Years’ resolutions are ten times more likely to change their behavior than people who do not make these yearly goals.
For this New Year’s (it’s not too late for resolutions, the year is still young), we’d like to introduce you to a concept that we learned about a few years back – choosing a single word to represent your resolutions. Embrace one word that helps you focus your time, energy, and mind on the next steps in your growth and makes an impact on your life. So how do you choose that one word for 2021? Ask yourself a few questions.
Think about your past year. What did not work for you? We realize this is a loaded question due to the pandemic; however, if you can, look past that.
- What do you need to focus on this year?
- What do you need to increase or reduce?
- What needs to change?
- What keeps you up at night? (Where is your data?)
Once you have answered these questions, then begin working on your word. At his point, for some people, they have their word already. For others, not yet. Try these activities to help you narrow in on your word:
- Visualize your word – create a vision board using images, words, graphics. Often a theme will begin to come into focus.
- Brainstorm words – Sometimes the word is not apparent, so just free flow words.
- Narrow your options – Once you have a list, narrow it down to 3-5.
- Test your word with others – Test those 3-5 words with people who know you best, family, friends, and colleagues. Does one word resonate more than the others?
- Lastly, own your word. Please share it. Be creative about how you keep it in front and center of your day today.
As you contemplate your one word, we wanted to share that we are focusing on ‘Security’ as our word for 2021. Security can mean many different things to people, financial, physical, emotional, etc. For us, an essential aspect of security is cybersecurity. While it is getting more difficult to distinguish between cybersecurity and security as so much of our lives and business are linked to both our digital assets and our online identities (both personal and corporate), we are committed to increasing our already diligent focus on cybersecurity in the coming year.
To keep ‘Security’ front and center of this year, we would like to invite you to subscribe to our weekly Security Tip. Every Tuesday, we will send you a security tip that helps improve your security awareness, practices, and behavior. These tips help educate you on best practices whether you are in the office, home, or traveling. We promise they will be short, a quick read, and relevant. We know that you have way too many things to take in from that Inbox!
This week’s was –
Tip of the Week:
Vishing – is when a cybercriminal contacts you by phone, impersonating someone in a position of authority.
If any person or company (including InfraNet) calls you creating a sense of urgency (requesting to change login, password, or network settings, etc.), hang up and call the business back, using the number you typically use to reach them. If they give you a call back number, ignore it and search for the organization’s public business number instead.
